The Aboriginal tribes of Australia believed the tea tree plant (Melaleuca alternifoliato) to be something of a cure all and used it for preventing infections and healing wounds.

Early settlers of new south Wales soon recognized the healing properties of tea tree and used it when medical supplies were unavailable in the bush.

However, it was only in the 1920s that scientific research began into this remarkable oil. By 1925, experiments proved tea tree to be a powerful antiseptic, 11 times stronger than carbolic acid (Phenol).

After these findings, tea tree research has discovered many more properties of this remarkable plant.

Research reveals that tea tree oil contains terpenoids, the most abundant being the terpinen-4-ol which is said to be the main compoud responsible for most of the antiseptic and anti-fungal activity when applied topically to affected areas.

In 1990, controlled experiments were conducted in Australia comparing tea tree oils against benzoyl peroxide, a common agent used in the treatment of acne. It was documented that tea tree oil took longer to work initially than benzoyl peroxide, but compared favorably, and had fewer side effects for the patients involved in these experiments.

Those that used benzoyl peroxide experienced side effects including itching, stinging, burning, and dryness. While tea tree may cause adverse reaction in some individuals, as with any compound, being a natural product it is certainly a far safer and preferable acne treatment alternative
